Following the success of free all-day car parking introduced by Shrewsbury BID over the May bank holiday, NCP has joined the scheme for Sunday 25th and Monday 26th August, making it a town centre wide initiative.

The two-part, free parking scheme with NCP, Shropshire Council and the owners of privately managed car parks was created to encourage visitors to Shrewsbury town centre over the bank holiday and help support traders.

The arrival of the Shrewsbury Flower Show was given a warm welcome by Shrewsbury BID this morning with two areas of the town centre transformed with an explosion of flowers and grass benches.

The statues of Charles Darwin and Clive of India woke up to a bright and flowery start in a stunt aimed to encourage visitors from the Flower Show to spend time and discover what the town centre has to offer.

Kirsten Henly has been appointed BID Manager of the Shrewsbury Business Improvement District (BID) which became operational at the beginning of April 2014, with a £1.6 million budget to help boost trading for the 500 Shrewsbury town centre businesses it incorporates.

Independent retailers and Shrewsbury's two principal shopping centres have reported a significant increase in sales and footfall on Sunday 25th May.

Following the launch of free all-day parking, footfall at the Darwin Centre and Pride Hill rose by 35% and 34% respectively, on last year's figures.

Shrewsbury will be the must visit place to go on Friday 4th July as independent retailers celebrate national Independents' Day.

Boutiques, small shops, delis and merchants will celebrate the day, raising a toast to their independence and Shrewsbury's unique retail offer.
Bucking the national trend, Shrewsbury's independent retailers outnumber big chains on the high street by almost half. There are 400 independents out of a total of 680 retailers in the town.
