While the Great British Bake Off has the nation's amateur bakers glued to their TV screens Shrewsbury has experienced a bit of its own baking mania. Artisan bakery Bread and Loaf issued a challenge to home bakers to have a go at making bread using the oldest and most difficult method, as part of the nationwide 'Sourdough September' campaign - and it has been inundated.

Students looking to start a degree course in 2016 can gain a taste of University Centre Shrewsbury life at an Open Day this weekend. As University Centre Shrewsbury's first undergraduates near the end of Welcome Week, the institution will throw its doors open to the next intake of prospective students.

The Open Day will take place on Saturday 3rd October 2015, from 10.30am to 3pm at the University Centre's main learning and research centre at Guildhall, Frankwell.

The new Darwin Centre Trust in Shrewsbury is to launch the International Institute for the Study of Compassion on Wednesday 30th September The Conference will be attended by individuals and media from across the Globe, including leading figures such as Andrew Stone, ex-chair of Marks & Spencer, Karen Armstrong author & TED prize winner, & author Ruth Padel the great-great-granddaughter of Charles Darwin.

University Centre Shrewsbury's first undergraduates and second intake of postgraduates are being welcomed to the town. Established by the University of Chester and Shropshire Council, with the community, University Centre Shrewsbury aims to bring new and varied prospects for students, the town and Shropshire.

A Shrewsbury couple are to run the coffee shop in the town's University Centre learning and research base at Guildhall. Mike and Nicola Dalton already run two successful coffee shops in the town; stop. coffee shop in Greyfriars and stop. cafe bar in Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery. The new venture at the building in Frankwell Quay will create four new jobs.

A Shrewsbury musician has just completed a commission from Shropshire Drama Company (SDC), to write and arrange four pieces of music for Theatre Severn production. The forthcoming production of William Shakespeare's As You Like It takes place at Theatre Severn from 28th to 31st October.

A distinguished academic with 35 years' experience of leadership in education has been appointed as University Centre Shrewsbury's Provost. In advance of the new academic year, Professor Anna Sutton has been selected for the senior role, heading up the management team at the University Centre.

Night time use of the footpath on a stretch of the River Severn has been improved thanks to additional new lighting introduced by the Town Council. Eight new lighting columns have been installed along a section of the river in the Castlefields area.

The soft-tone LED lights can be directed at specific spots providing better illumination for the footpath, whilst also reducing light pollution for nearby residents.

The Mayor of Shrewsbury is set to mark his 65th birthday with a difference as he prepares to saddle up for a charity tandem bike ride. Councillor Miles Kenny and Mayor's Officer Robert Handley will ride from Shrewsbury to Lake Vyrnwy and back - 65 miles - to raise funds for the Mayor's chosen charities; Lingen Davies Cancer Fund and The Shrewsbury Ark on October 4.

Eminent academics and historians brought the battles, campaigns, tactics, personalities and armies of the English Civil War into sight at an event hosted by University Centre Shrewsbury. One of the world's leading publishers of military history - Helion & Company Ltd - chose the town's iconic Rowley's House building and University Centre base as the venue for its first English Civil War Conference on Saturday 19th September.
