Charity head shave Shrewsbury

A young woman who weighed just one pound when she was born has marked her 30th birthday by having her head shaved for two children's charities, one of them for premature babies. Lyndsay Reid, who works in the Pride Hill Shopping Centre, wanted to do something different to celebrate her milestone birthday and raise money for good causes at the same time.

A mum of two who lost her husband to cancer and has battled the disease herself is urging visitors to Shrewsbury's busy Darwin Shopping Centre to support the mall's Christmas grotto in raising funds for Macmillan. Julia Allinson says she had incredible support from the charity when her husband Geoff was diagnosed with a rare blood cancer in 2011, and again when the unthinkable happened and she was found to have breast cancer herself in 2013.

Shrewsbury's Park and Ride service is to be extended tonight. An 'extra' bus is set to leave each of the three Park and Ride sites at 30-minute intervals from 6.50pm until 8.50pm. The last bus will leave the town centre at 9pm.

However, people are reminded that these services may run later than advertised, as roads will be closed for Carols in the Square.

Normal Park and Ride charges will apply.

Independent Shrewsbury retailers have praised the 'transformation' of the town's Square into a thriving focal point for shopping and eating. The business people have all said that footfall in this area of the town has steadily increased over the last 12 months, boosting trade and raising their profile.

Women's wear brand Jigsaw recently opened in The Square, meaning that every unit there is now full.

An award-winning Shrewsbury bar and restaurant is toasting the launch of a new drink produced in the town. Henry Tudor House, situated just off Wyle Cop, is the first stockist of Shropshire Lager, the latest offering from Battlefield Brewery.

The beverage will be on tap in Henry Tudor House's popular bar for customers to enjoy over the Christmas and New Year period.

A snow filled light projection will wow crowds in Shrewsbury's Town Square on Wednesday 16th December as part of the late night shopping and events offer in the town centre. Snow will fall as part of a magical moving Christmas show projected onto the Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery, while music will complete the interactive audio-visual experience.

Work to convert an unused building in Shrewsbury into student accommodation has been praised by Shropshire Council. Mardol House is home to students at the new University Centre Shrewsbury.

Formerly occupied by the county magistrates court and Inland Revenue offices the building had been empty for up to 15 years before work was carried out to convert it into modern hall of residence for upto 85 students.

Final preparations are underway for Shrewsbury's Carols in the Square concert which returns to the town on Wednesday evening. The event, which is a hugely popular attraction in Shrewsbury's festive calendar, kicks off from 5.30pm with music for all the family.

Shrewsbury Town Council is managing the concert, which will be broadcast live on BBC Radio Shropshire with Eric Smith from 6.05pm.
