The Hornbeam tree in the Quarry Park has had to be removed for safety reasons after it was found to be in serious, and irreversible, decline.

Some of the tree’s branches overhung the new splash park and several branches have recently fallen giving cause for concern.

The Town Council has carried out a programme of works over the last three years to try and save the Champion Tree, which is the largest girthed Hornbeam in the country.

University Centre Shrewsbury marked another first this week when people were brought together from across the country for an Inaugural Professorial Lecture.

Professor John Buckley presented his inaugural lecture on ‘Sport and Exercise: Perceptions and Realities in Health’ on Wednesday 22nd June.

Shrewsbury’s green-fingered residents are invited to enter the newly revamped Town of Flowers competition.

This year, the Shrewsbury in Bloom committee is calling on members of the public to nominate entries for the best residential front garden category. Previously entrants had been able to nominate their own garden displays.

The competition is open to residents’ front gardens only and must be located within Shrewsbury Town Council’s 17 wards.

Members of the public are invited to attend a Party in the (Quarry) Park which is being organised by the town’s Mayor.

Councillor Ioan Jones, who took office in May, will be hosting the event on 3rd July between 1-4pm.

There will be no admittance charge but there will be a collection in aid of the Mayor’s Charity Fund which is aiming to raise enough money to purchase a defibrillator for each of Shrewsbury’s secondary schools and colleges.

The UK’s only touring tribute festival is coming to Shrewsbury for the first time this summer, and is celebrating its 10th anniversary. All the fun kicks off at the Quarry Park on Saturday, 27th August, with three major tribute acts and five local support bands, who will be turning up the heat this summer.

Theatre Severn have announced this week a star line up for their latest large-scale production ‘Rehearsal for Murder’. Appearing at the venue in June the riveting murder mystery promises to keep audiences on the edge of their seats and the cast includes soap stars, sixties icons, and even a star of the Carry On films.

The Shropshire Youth Support Trust (SYST) has teamed up with University Centre Shrewsbury (UCS) to offer a drop-in advice session for unemployed young people to discuss opportunities and support available to set up their own business.

People can stop by at Guildhall, UCS’s learning and research base, on Wednesday 29th June between 12pm and 3pm for information and guidance on running a successful business.

So much fun it shouldn’t be legal! This week see Broadway and West End sensation Legally Blonde the Musical take to the Theatre Severn stage. Based on the Hollywood smash-hit starring Reese Witherspoon as leading lady Elle Woods, the musical is arriving in Shropshire for the first time and opens on Wednesday 15th June.
