Interested organisations will find out next week how to prepare and submit their proposals for keeping a swimming pool in Shrewsbury town centre.

In July 2016 Shropshire Council’s Cabinet agreed that Shrewsbury Sports Village is the preferred location for future swimming provision in Shrewsbury, rather than the current location at the Quarry Park in the town centre.

Students looking to start a degree course in 2017 can gain a taste of University Centre Shrewsbury (UCS) life at an Open Day next month.

As UCS’s newest undergraduates settle into their studies, the institution will throw its doors open to the next intake of prospective students.

Shrewsbury Town Councillors have reinforced their commitment to retaining the Quarry swimming pool within the town centre.

Members have reiterated their concerns regarding the baths moving out of town as part of an overall response to Shropshire Council’s Sports Facilities Strategy, which is currently out for public consultation.

Shrewsbury has once again proved its floral features are blooming brilliant after being awarded Gold in the Heart of England in Bloom competition.

The results were announced at a ceremony in Aldridge earlier today.

Shrewsbury achieved Gold in the Small City and Large Park categories, as well as a Horticultural Excellence Award for The Dingle.

University Centre Shrewsbury (UCS) students and staff are inviting people to join them for a brew and a slice of cake as part of The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.

Student Holly-Elizabeth Smith is hosting the Coffee Morning on Friday 30th September, to contribute to the nationwide fundraising activities.

Shrewsbury Business Improvement District (BID) has launched a Christmas carol competition ahead of filming its annual Christmas video. 

From Dingle bells to Shrewdolph the Red nose reindeer, the search is on for writers to create Shrewsbury themed seasonal lyrics for the Christmas classic, Silent Night.

The Hive, a registered charity and a town centre arts & creative venue has been successful in securing £48,555 from Arts Council England through their ‘Grants for the Arts’ funding scheme.  

The fund will help the Hive to develop its artistic programming and engage with new audiences.

Shropshire’s county regiment, The Rifles, will be granted the Freedom of Shrewsbury by the town’s Mayor next week.

Councillor Ioan Jones will welcome The Rifles on Wednesday with a service at St Chad’s Church at 1pm.

Following the service, the troops will parade onto St Chad’s Terrace at 2pm, before marching past the Mayor at the entrance to the Quarry Park.

Shrewsbury shoppers can now enjoy part of the popular historic Wakeman ‘Look Up’ Trail, after some of the famed ceramic tiles went on display at Pride Hill Shopping Centre.

The new feature was installed as part of the £85,000 refurbishment of the customer toilet facilities, and offers a chance to see some of the historic Wakeman School and Arts College artwork that has been preserved as part of the ongoing project.

A fascinating free exhibition bringing to life the stories behind Shropshire’s varied place names is now on show at Shropshire Archives on Castle Gates in Shrewsbury.

The display charts the origins of Shropshire place names from their ancient roots in pre-history, and explains their unique meanings inspired by the landscape and by the people who lived there. Place names also shed light on the languages spoken in the past.
