A talk presented by University Centre Shrewsbury on Wednesday 25th January will explore the life of the country’s most successful Battle of Britain pilot, a Shropshire native who was born in Bayston Hill.

Eric Lock entered the RAF as a volunteer and earned his wings in 1940, and he went on to shoot down more enemy planes than any other pilot during the Battle of Britain.

A seminar at University Centre Shrewsbury on Wednesday 1st February will explore the complex relationship between man and mountain. 

The keynote speaker is Dr Rob Casserley, who has climbed Mount Everest no fewer than eight times. Dr Casserley runs a successful expedition company that aims to help people overcome personal challenges as they explore treacherous terrain.

An exhibition showcasing how new developments can be successfully planned and built in historic towns such as Shrewsbury is to be staged this month.

The event is to be hosted in the town by county architects Johnson Design Partnership on January 30th and 31st and will focus on how buildings in conservation areas can be sympathetically constructed and extended.

Purple Flag status was granted to Shrewsbury town centre for the first time last year for its safe and welcoming evening and night-time economy. Now assessors have decided it should keep this nationally recognised award for 2017.

A formal consultation on a proposed Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) for Shrewsbury town centre and Frankwell playing fields is to start next Monday 9th January 2017 and run for eight weeks.

The PSPO would help the police and council officers to address certain antisocial behaviours and has been developed in response to concerns expressed by the public, local businesses and the police in conjunction with Team Shrewsbury.

A new social committee for staff at a Shropshire law firm has raised almost £600 for charity this year.

The group from Shrewsbury-based Wace Morgan Solicitors has been busy organising a range of outings and events.

“The committee is proving to be a great way of getting staff together in an informal and fun way and also of collecting money for good causes in the county and mid Wales,” said conveyancer Karen Ashton, who chairs the committee.
