Following on from the success of the previous Uptown Folk season, The Hive, a registered charity and a Shrewsbury town centre arts & creative venue, is launching their new season by welcoming Megson to Shrewsbury on Friday 6th October. 

Four times nominated in the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and double winners of the  Spiral Earth Awards, Megson draw heavily on their Teesside heritage to create a truly unique brand of folk music.

Shropshire students are being given a helping hand to trim costs by a county business.

Hairdressing salon Toni & Guy is introducing ‘VAT-free’ days for anyone with a student card.

“We are going to pay the VAT for students on Mondays to Thursdays so that effectively our prices will be reduced by 20% to them,” explained Gavin Pulham, who owns the business, based in Castle Street, Shrewsbury.

An open event is to be held at a Shrewsbury business which has just completed a £50,000 refurbishment.

Write Here, in the town’s High Street, has been transformed into one of the best independent pen shops in the country and will host the event on September 15 from 2pm until 7.30pm.

John Hall, owner of the business, which employs six people, says that he is looking forward to showing off the revamped premises, which mean that is now a leading UK retailer in this sector.

A reading group at University Centre Shrewsbury (UCS) will consider the importance of singer-songwriter Bob Dylan’s work in the light of his recent Nobel Prize for Literature award.

Dr Giulia Miller will host the free event at Guildhall, UCS’s teaching and research base, on Saturday September 9, 2017, from 1.30pm to 3.30pm.

Shrewsbury Market Hall is gearing up for its second monthly Saturday late night opening on September 2.

Bars, cafes, restaurants and a selection of retail stalls will be open up until 10pm.

Market facilities manager Kate Gittins hailed the first regular late night, held on August 5, a “resounding success”.

New appointments have been made as part of a county building company’s expansion plans.

Vicky Burton (27), joins Shrewsbury-based Galliers Homes as a quantity surveyor and will be working on the firm’s sites throughout Shropshire.

Vicky, of Telford, has five years’ experience in the housing sector, starting in the industry as an assistant quantity surveyor for a national company following a QS degree at Wolverhampton University.
