Boutiques boost The Square

Independent Shrewsbury retailers have praised the 'transformation' of the town's Square into a thriving focal point for shopping and eating. The business people have all said that footfall in this area of the town has steadily increased over the last 12 months, boosting trade and raising their profile.

Women's wear brand Jigsaw recently opened in The Square, meaning that every unit there is now full.

David Whittaker of Acoustic Boutique, a locally-owned music system specialist, said that the mix of national names, such as Carluccio's and Jigsaw, alongside high quality independents, was proving to be a winning formula.

"We opened here just over 12 months ago and since then we have seen The Square transform into a really smart destination for shopping and food," he said.

"Footfall has definitely increased in the last year and we are happy to say that we have had a very successful time here. Business is brisk and customer numbers are rising steadily and we are looking forward to a busy year ahead."

Carol Grant, whose designer women's wear shop has been in The Square for 24 years, said: "We have been in The Square for many years and it just gets better all the time! The Square is the heart of Shrewsbury, with local markets, entertainment and history. I never fail to feel it's special quality when I look across this unique area."

Pockets, which sells men's fashions and accessories, is also one of The Square's and Shrewsbury's long-standing independents stores.

Manager Mark Lomas added: "The Square is continuing its transformation as an even better place to shop, eat and enjoy the culture and entertainment in the town. and we are very proud to be celebrating our 20th anniversary here in April 2016.

"It is great to see stores investing in Shrewsbury and the opening of new businesses here are a fantastic addition to the town's shopping offer."

There are plans underway to transform the landmark Princess House building which overlooks The Square into 50 new apartments and 12 penthouse suites.
