It’s time to celebrate and show love and appreciation for the mothers in our lives. Shrewsbury is a great place to spend some quality time together and make some memories. Here are our top five suggestions for Mother’s Day.
Life through a lens
Marvel at powerful and amazing images from some of the world’s best photographers. Charles Darwin’s birthplace is the appropriate stage for Evolution Explored, A Magnum Photos Exhibition. This free street exhibition, the first of its kind for a UK town, features work from the acclaimed Magnum Photos Agency and can be seen at The Square and St Mary’s Church.
Muse the old and new
For a family-friendly time, visit the Rhyme Around the World Exhibition at Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery. This touring exhibition, which runs until 7th May, is sure to bring back many happy childhood memories. There’s plenty more to see at the venue which brings the county’s history to life through a thousand remarkable objects.
Watch with Mum
Going to see a film is an occasion to be savoured in Shrewsbury’s independent cinema in The Square. The Old Market Hall is small but beautifully formed. On Mother’s Day it screens Hollywood hit Hidden Figures, an uplifting story of pioneering African-American female Nasa scientists who played their part in sending astronaut John Glenn into space in 1962.
Walking through Shrewsbury to enjoy its sights and charms is a real pleasure and a perfect way to spend quality time with mum. Head down to the River Severn for a boat trip aboard Sabrina for a different perspective of the town. Riverboat tours run every hour between 11am and 4pm from the Victoria Quayside, next to Welsh Bridge.
Treat mum to some retail therapy. It doesn’t get any better than Shrewsbury when it comes to choice and originality. Check out Wyle Cop for more than 50 independent businesses which offer something different.
Big store favourites have much to offer too. House of Fraser on High Street has welcomed Charlotte Tilbury, Benefit and Dior in the beauty hall and Barbour Lifestyle, Hobbs and Gant in fashion. Also on High Street are Pure Collection, Crew Clothing and White Stuff which are just some of the many shops which are sure to appeal to mums.
For fashion fans, denim is undergoing a transformation with new shapes for spring available in NEXT and New Look in the Darwin Shopping Centre and M&S, River Island, TopShop and H&M in the Pride Hill Centre.
Shrewsbury’s cafés, pubs and restaurants will be serving up great food and drink in welcoming settings for a perfect Mothering Sunday. For sweet treats check out the new Roly’s Fudge on High Street where you can watch the fudge being made.
