Come and find out about the new UCS Master’s Degree in Rural Health

The effective delivery of healthcare in highly rural counties such as Shropshire brings complex logistical challenges. A new course being offered at University Centre Shrewsbury (UCS) aims to empower healthcare professionals to overcome obstacles associated with working in the countryside by sharing knowledge and experience to develop a framework for best practice.

An advanced course in rural health and medicine, the MSc in Rural Health facilitates a bespoke approach to learning, allowing practitioners to critically consider their own practice. The course will be multi- and interdisciplinary, reflecting the primary care services provided by a range of healthcare professionals, and valuing the skills and experiences of all participants. UCS is offering a Taster Day for the course at Guildhall, Frankwell Quay, the centre’s main teaching space, on Friday 12 May, which will include input from Derek Willis of Severn Hospice on the challenges of delivering palliative care in rural areas.

Programme Leader Professor Elizabeth Mason-Whitehead explains: “The location and nature of UCS gives us a unique advantage when it comes to delivering a course of this nature. We’re situated in one of the most rural counties in England, yet we have all the resources at hand to deliver a world-class course that will enrich the professional lives of those who actively deliver our county’s healthcare.

“One of our stated aims as a provider of Higher Education is to address concerns around rural health, with a view to ensuring our population is fully provided for. The distinct rural health topics and themes experienced by practitioners in their day-to-day work are explored and developed in teaching and research offered within our MSc Rural Health programme.”
