Creative thinking supports Shrewsbury town centre’s appeal

A temporarily vacant shop in Shrewsbury town centre is being put to creative use with a focus on a talented Midlands’ photographer.

The changing gallery of inspirational nature and landscape photographs by Wolverhampton-based Lindsey Bucknor OBE is on display in the window of the shop on Wyle Cop.

Landlord Mrs Thomas has provided the space as a showcase until a new tenant is found. She has called on other property owners with vacant units to follow suit to add interest to Shrewsbury’s diverse appeal.

Mrs Thomas said: “We are taking steps to re-let this prime unit but until we do this is an opportunity to do something a bit different. The photographs are amazing, with the current ‘Scenes of Shropshire’ display proving a big draw. “

Lindsey Bucknor’s Wrekin Sunset image won the 2014 Go Explore Shropshire competition and he was shortlisted in the 2017 Scottish Landscape Photographer of the Year competition.

Toby Shaw from Towler Shaw Roberts, the agents for the shop, said “Using temporarily vacant units in this way creates interest in the properties and is helpful to other local traders too.”

Seb Slater, executive director of Shrewsbury BID, said: “We support initiatives that allow artists and curators to transform vacant shops and spaces into creative galleries and studios. Such short-term use can be a great opportunity as new ideas, business ventures and networks may start to evolve.

“Shrewsbury has an enterprising and evolving retail offer and businesses do change. If units are vacant this is a way to support the creative community and helps landlords to promote their properties until new tenants move in.”
