Get in gear with Flower Show challenge

Information, advice and a charity cycle challenge will be on offer to people visiting the University Centre Shrewsbury marquee at this year's Shrewsbury Flower Show. University Centre staff will be on hand to talk to visitors about the institution - and at the same time people will be given the opportunity to take on the 50-50 Pedal Power Challenge.

Members of the team will be at a small marquee next to the river, just off the pathway leading down from the bandstand, throughout the show which takes place on Friday 14th August and Saturday 15th August.

They will be joined by staff from Shrewsbury Sixth Form College who are working closely with the University Centre and will also be sharing details of their courses.

The exercise bike challenge invites people to get pedalling to burn 50 calories for 50p. Staff will pull together statistics to work out how long it will take for each person.

The proceeds will be split between Age UK and the Lingen Davies Cancer Relief Fund.

John Buckley, Professor of Applied Exercise Science at University Centre Shrewsbury, has devised the challenge and will be part of the team at the marquee.

He said: "We're urging people to come along to our stand to find out more about University Centre Shrewsbury and those that are feeling energetic have the opportunity to take part in our 50-50 Pedal Power Challenge.

"People can find out exactly how long it takes for them to lose 50 calories - which is about the same amount as in a jaffa cake."

Professor Buckley, Chair of the International Council of Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation, added why the team was running the challenge.

"We wanted to illustrate some of the aspects of what's happening at University Centre Shrewsbury in a fun, quick and interactive way.

"The challenge links to one of our learning and research areas - medicine and health. We're undertaking research to look at how to improve people's health and the courses offered include a Bachelor of Science in Health and Exercise Science and a Master of Science in Exercise Medicine.

"We thought it might be interesting for people to see, on an individual basis, exactly how long it takes to burn 50 calories, and also thought it was a good way to raise some money for charity.

"We set up a stand at the Flower Show last year as part of ongoing events in the community and it was a great way to share information on the University Centre. We're looking forward to chatting to visitors again and answering any questions they may have."

Shrewsbury Flower Show is one of England's premier Flower Show events, attracting top exhibitors and horticulturalists from across the country.

The event, established in 1875, is recorded in the Guinness Book of Records as the world's longest-running Flower Show in one location.

The Show is organised by Shropshire Horticultural Society and attracts thousands of visitors each day.

It will feature several floral marquees, premiership show jumping in the main arena, a falconry display, medieval knight jousting, quad bike stunt displays, gardening advice from horticultural expert Pippa Greenwood, celebrity chef Tom Kerridge providing cooking demonstrations in the Food Hall, together with a full programme of family entertainment. The evenings will see a concert by classical cross-over company Encora on Friday with The Proclaimers on Saturday, followed by fireworks both nights.

Through the proceeds, millions of pounds have been donated to charities, as well as bursaries being awarded to students of horticulture in Further and Higher Education.
