Sailing down the Severn this summer

  • River events and festivals in Shrewsbury, Shropshire

If you enjoy nothing more than messing about on the river once the summer sun appears, why not make waves in Shrewsbury with five fantastic events taking place on the River Severn very soon.

Ahoy! Land-lovers and sea-farers alike will relish the chance to take part in the pirate themed River Festival this year. Taking place on Sunday 8th June, the first of our events to make a splash on the Severn will be at Quarry Park where participants take part in the flotilla parade and spur the boats onto success with horns, whistles and drums.

Starting at 10:00am until 5:00pm, book your seat on the banks of the river or in the park to make sure you don't miss out on the spectacle.

Coracle Oracles For a more quirky, one-off event, the Macmillan World Championship Coracle Race is a must, taking place on Saturday 14th June at the Pengwern Boat Club. Spectators and entrants can line the banks of the Severn at the bi-annual event, and watch on as 48 enthusiastic teams go head to head in a relay race in the uniquely shaped boats, taking on the current world champions and messing about in boats for the afternoon.

Dragon Roars on the River For those adventurous at heart, why not witness the Dragon Boat Festival. Taking place on Sunday 22nd June at the Pengwern Boat Club, and in association with Severn Hospice, races begin from 10:00am until approximately 3:30pm. To snap up the chance to witness the fast and furious rounds as well as the thrilling final, mark this in your diary as one not to be missed. Guaranteed not to drag-on!

Summer with Sabrina Want to feel like a goddess of the river? Why not while away a day or an evening on the River Severn's very own Sabrina Boat. With a triple deck capable of holding 60 passengers, enjoy a first class experience on board as you cruise from Victoria Quay to English Bridge and back again, soaking up the one-off Shrewsbury views.

Sabrina Boat provides the perfect venue to admire the town's twinkling lights and illuminated bridges, or to watch the sun set on a summer's evening.

Quarry Quirks Why not head down to the Quarry for an open air performance from Jools Holland & his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra who will wow crowds with a night of boogie-woogie and non-stop entertainment on Saturday 12th July. Complete with 18-piece band, special guests and a grand firework finale, this, as well as a plethora of performances to tempt all at Theatre Severn, is a must-see this summer in Shrewsbury.
