Shrewsbury BID banks Gold award for blooms

The Shrewsbury Business Improvement District (BID) was crowned in a new Heart of England In Bloom award category held in Rugby today, winning Gold for their horticultural achievement, environmental responsibility and community participation. Shrewsbury BID joined community groups, towns and villages from across the region at the prestigious award ceremony celebrating floral achievements in the Heart of England.

Kirsten Henly, BID Manager said: "Shrewsbury prides itself on its flowers so winning Gold in the BID category is a real honour. The new category has given us the opportunity to participate in this campaign, which is working to transform communities to make them make them greener and cleaner and demonstrate that attractive green spaces really can help economies grow.

"The Town Council and Shropshire Council work throughout the year to care for Shrewsbury's blooms, but this year we've been able to involve the business community and recognise the contribution they also make to the town's floral offer."

Helen Ball, Town Clerk added: "We are delighted with the results of Shrewsbury BID's first entry into the competition. Bloom and business go hand in hand, green streets encourage people to linger longer, help to bond communities together and reduce anti-social behaviour, all conditions which help businesses to thrive. We are sure this news will only serve to raise Shrewsbury's profile even more and highlight what a beautiful town it is to live, work in and visit."

Judges visited Shrewsbury in July to meet businesses, event organisers and key representatives from the University and the Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery.
