Students get help with trimming costs

Shropshire students are being given a helping hand to trim costs by a county business.

Hairdressing salon Toni & Guy is introducing ‘VAT-free’ days for anyone with a student card.

“We are going to pay the VAT for students on Mondays to Thursdays so that effectively our prices will be reduced by 20% to them,” explained Gavin Pulham, who owns the business, based in Castle Street, Shrewsbury.

“The initiative was the idea of our younger members of staff here, many of whom have been at college and know how difficult it is to get by on a grant, especially these days.

“We have got lots of existing customers who will benefit and of course hope that the VAT free days will encourage other new clients to come along too to take advantage of the offer,” Gavin said.

He explained that if the scheme was successful he would extend it to members of staff from the NHS and other key workers.

“We know it’s not the easiest of economic climates but lots of people still like to treat themselves to a good hair cut and we want to help out as much as we can,” Gavin added.

One of the first students to take advantage of the offer was Ellie Ashley, of Sundorne, Shrewsbury, who is just starting a course in animal care and performing arts at Derwen College, Gobowen.
