University Centre Shrewsbury Reading Group to discuss ‘Bob Dylan - Nobel Prize Winner’

A reading group at University Centre Shrewsbury (UCS) will consider the importance of singer-songwriter Bob Dylan’s work in the light of his recent Nobel Prize for Literature award.

Dr Giulia Miller will host the free event at Guildhall, UCS’s teaching and research base, on Saturday September 9, 2017, from 1.30pm to 3.30pm.

Bob Dylan accepted the 2016 Nobel Prize in Literature. The first songwriter to receive the prestigious award, Dylan joins a celebrated group of laureates including Thomas Mann, Samuel Beckett and Doris Lessing.

Dylan was honoured “for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition,” the Nobel committee said when the award was announced in October 2016.

Dr Miller, a Visiting Lecturer in English Literature at the University of Chester, said: “Please join us for what promises to be a lively discussion about Bob Dylan's work - there will be music too.”

Booking for the free ‘Bob Dylan - Nobel Prize Winner Reading Group’ is essential. To book places, email [email protected] or call 01743 297185.

Alternatively, people can visit the reception at Guildhall in Frankwell Quay (SY3 8HQ) which is open from 9am to 5pm Monday to Thursday and from 9am to 4pm on Fridays.

The talk is part of a series of events at UCS covering a selection of subjects. Many of the events are free, and they are open to everyone. For further details on UCS events go to www.ucshrewsbury.ac.uk/public-events.
