Things to do at Christmas

Hunt down some history in Shrewsbury’s medieval streets or roam the riverbank on crisp winter days. Applaud the pantomime dame, listen to music that’s loud and live. Shop ‘til you drop or get away from it all - the choice is yours.

Kicking off the late night Christmas shopping is the Christmas Light Switch On in November, with the penultimate late night Wednesday before Christmas celebrated with Carols in the Square.

Don’t miss this the 2017 panto at Theatre Severn. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs will be bringing magic and mayhem to audiences, with a colourful cast of characters telling the tale of good against evil in the search for true love.

The towns many churches make great seasonal venues too. Visit St Chad’s Church for the annual Shrewsbury Christmas Tree Festival. 50 trees fill the circular knave, each perfectly decorated and sponsored by a local group. Or try St Mary’s Church, which holds Christmas services and concerts. Visit the events page for information on what’s coming up.

Take the kids to meet Santa in Shrewsbury at the Christmas grotto in the Darwin Shopping Centre. There’s no better way to perk children up while Christmas shopping than having the chance to meet Father Christmas and his reindeer.

Or for shopping in the open air, visit the Shrewsbury Christmas Market in the Square on Saturday 16th December 2017. The farmers market brings together independent traders from across Shropshire to offer fresh, locally produced food.

If you’re planning a seasonal day in Shrewsbury, take a tour around the movie locations of the 1984 classic, A Christmas Carol. Scenes in the film used St Julian’s Church, the Parade Shopping Centre and St Chad’s churchyard, where Ebenezer Scrooge’s grave can still be seen today.
