The Square
SY1 1LH Shrewsbury

Shrewsbury Square is at the heart of the town and remains an important space for the people of the town.

The Old Market Hall Cinema stands in the centre, housed in the town's original Market Hall, which was built in 1596, replacing the previous Market House, which was built in 1260.

To the back of the Square, is the Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery. The new Museum and Art Gallery opened in 2014 and is based in the 13th century Vaughan’s Mansion.

The Square holds two markets a month, the Made in Shropshire Market, showcasing handmade crafts from local artisans and the Shrewsbury Farmers Market, offering high-quality farm fresh foods, straight from Shropshire's Fields. Many other popular events take place in the Square throughout the year, including the Christmas Light Switch On and Carols in the Square during the festive period.

Guarding the front of the Square is a statue of Clive of India, the British officer who established military and political supremacy of the East India Company in Bengal and later become to MP for Shrewsbury and then Mayor in 1762.
