About

A Shrewbury Original since
1842

Established in 1842, Tanners is a family run, independent wine merchant. Tanners delivers an excellent collection of wines and spirits all over the UK.

About half of Tanners sales are to quality-minded hotels and restaurants and half to private clients and corporate customers, both locally and around the country. Tanners is all about good, traditional service, delivered by a team of friendly and knowledgeable staff, many of whom are long-serving. Tanners has won countless national awards and accolades, recognising the firm as one of the best wine merchants in the UK.

The Cellars Shop on Wyle Cop is the flagship of Tanners retail operations, stocking the full Tanners range of wines and spirits, along with all the fine and rare Oddment wines.

A Shrewsbury Original

Tanners’ 175-year old roots lie firmly in the heart of Shrewsbury. William Tanner, born in Shropshire in 1839, went to sea and sailed the world visiting places as far flung as Australia and Chile. Returning as a ship's captain in 1872, he took his brother Henry Edward into partnership and founded the firm of W. & H. E Tanner in Shrewsbury. Its cellars were those of the now demolished Victorian Market Hall; its offices were in Shoplatch.

Thomas Southam & Son, founded at Wyle Cop in 1842 and having an excellent reputation as wine merchants, was taken over by Tanners in 1936. For some years the two businesses were run separately but, when Tanners' cellars were requisitioned during the war as air raid shelters, both businesses were amalgamated at Wyle Cop.

Tanners is family-owned, family-run and resolutely independent and is celebrating its 175 anniversary this year! It is run by James Tanner chairman, who is the fourth generation of the family to work in the company. The firm employs over 100 people with the majority split between its distinctive, black & white headquarters in Shrewsbury and its distribution depot in Wales.

Meet The Team

Robert Crosland, Retail Manager
Having grown up with aspirations to be a footballer, Robert settled for going to watch Shrewsbury Town as much as possible and joined Tanners straight from school instead. Although he's based in our Cellars Shop, Robert manages all of Tanners retail operations with a wealth of experience under his belt as he's now worked in the trade for more than 35 years. His one wish for the trade would be to see an end to retailers' misleading discounts and he would like customers to experiment more with Southern French Wines as they offer such great value.
Nick Whittal, Wine Training Officer
Having studied French and Spanish at university and then taught languages prior to joining Tanners, Nick has tenaciously kept up the studying and teaching since and has achieved his WSET diploma. His most memorable wine-drinking experience was attending a tutored Champagne tasting with Hubert de Billy of Pol Roger - perhaps it's no surprise then that his desert island drink of choice would be a mature Pinot Noir-dominated Champagne! An interesting piece of trivia: Nick's great-great grandfather was the Grand Old Man of Singapore.
Howard Hutchins, Wine Adviser
Having travelled extensively around the wine regions of New Zealand before joining Tanners, it's perhaps no surprise that Howard has been bitten by the travel bug. Next on his list is a visit to Tuscany as he's currently obsessed with Italian wines. In fact he's got a bottle of Brunello di Montalcino DOCG Colleoni, Santa Maria 2001 sitting in his wine rack which ranks as his most expensive wine purchase... he now just needs to decide when to drink it! Aside from Italian and Kiwi wines, Howard would like to see customers being a little more adventurous: Austria produces some amazing wines, and he thinks vast swathes of Spain get overlooked as everyone knows Rioja but there is so much more to the country than just this region.
Marie Claire Gillett, Wine Adviser
If it hadn't been for the fact that Marie Claire fainted when she did work experience, she may well have ended up as a vet! Instead, after time spent travelling in India, she joined Tanners more than 15 years ago, got married in New Mexico and the next trip on her list is Chile to visit their wine regions. From Tanners Gascony Dry White as an everyday option, through top-notch Alsatian Gewürztraminer as a treat to the Chilean Coyam as her ultimate dinner party wine, Marie Claire's taste in wine is as broad as her taste for travelling, but she is just as happy unwinding with a good Bourbon.
Branislav Prievoznik, Wine Adviser
Bran joined Tanners Wines in November 2015 with previous experience as a sommelier; waiter and mixologist over 12 years. Bran absolutely loves champagne, especially vintage champagne! But when it comes to ‘everyday wine’ it would be a glass of Primitivo or Cucao. His favourite food and wine pairing would be Central Otago Pinot to accompany a lamb supper. His dream dinner guests would be Rafael Nadal, Michael Bublé and Roger Federer, reflecting his keen interest in tennis and music. He would serve either Vosne Romanée or Puligny Montrachet and talk all evening long!
Martin Thibodaux, Wine Adviser
Martin’s career in wine started 2006 as a vineyard worker followed by an apprenticeship in a wine shop in Auxerre. He joined Tanners in April 2016 and soon gained WSET Level 2. Martin enjoys Italian reds like a Brunello or Barolo but when asked what his everyday favourites are he professes a love for Tons de Duorum for a cold winter night or a Picpoul de Pinet for the warm English summer. His most memorable drinking experience has been Montrachet Grand Cru 2007 Domaine des Comtes Lafon. Martin is very proud of his claim to notoriety by being amongst the top 10 in France at fencing at the age of 15 - but no need to be ”en garde”, Martin will always be happy to help customers make the right wine choice!
